Zhaoqing has a long history and was called Duanzhou in ancient times. In 1118 AD, Zhao Ji, the Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty, granted the title of Duanzhou King before he ascended the throne, so he personally gave a royal letter to change Duanzhou to Zhaoqing, meaning "a happy and auspicious beginning".
